Over the next five years, Dresden will become a smart city with the help of EA Systems Dresden. The European Commission approved the Horizon 2020 project MAtchUP and is providing a total of €17.5 million for greater sustainability and intelligent connectivity. Alongside Cologne, Hamburg, and Munich, Dresden will become Germany’s fourth lighthouse city.

Smart City Dresden – EA Systems Dresden Simulates an Energy-Efficient District

What Is Planned?

Dresden’s Johannstadt district, close to the city center, will be transformed into an energy-efficient district. Alongside implementing individual measures, a major focus is their transferability and scalability to other districts and cities. MAtchUp focuses on the following topics:

  • Renovation of residential buildings, including PV systems and charging stations
  • Connecting local renewable energy, storage, and intelligent controls (e.g., tenant electricity schemes)
  • Establishing grid-supportive district storage
  • Grid-supportive charging infrastructure for electric vehicles and mobility hubs
  • Intelligent, energy-efficient street lighting
  • Central collection of all public building energy data (central building control center)

Services Provided by EA Systems Dresden GmbH

EA Systems Dresden participates in seven work packages. Through model-based simulation, the company plays a central, connecting role in the overall project. “We are developing a district model for Johannstadt that combines the various measures, strategies, and technologies. This makes a significant contribution to reducing energy costs, noise, and CO2 and creating a more livable environment for residents,” explains René Unger, CEO of EA Systems Dresden.
The company’s specific project tasks are:

  • Modeling the project area (residential districts, schools, charging infrastructure, tenant electricity schemes)
  • Creating a Green City simulation model of the entire district and its energy behavior
  • Planning and optimizing management strategies for district electricity storage
  • Testing proposed concept variants and control strategies
  • Technical consultancy for the planned central building control center
  • Technical consultancy on intelligent street lighting
  • Monitoring and evaluating the measures implemented
