FMI4BIM – Building and Plant Simulation in the BIM Process

Building Information Modeling (BIM) provides a shared data foundation throughout a building’s lifecycle. Plans and information no longer need to be transferred in separate formats and manually compiled again for each subsequent planning step.

FMI4BIM extends this approach to building and plant simulation. A coupled analysis helps planners size technical systems on a sound basis and optimize their subsequent operation.

From the BIM Model to Coupled Simulation

Converting BIM building data into a coupled simulation model

In everyday planning, required information is often compiled separately and remodeled in different programs for individual questions. This makes it difficult to reuse existing models and data.

The project therefore creates models that can be coupled through the Functional Mock-up Interface (FMI) standard. FMI enables different simulation models to be connected without disclosing their source code, protecting the intellectual property of the respective model developers.

The aim is to facilitate collaboration between plant and building planners and advance digitalization in the construction and building sectors.
