Assessing an Ice Storage System for Heating and Cooling

Simulation model with an energy fence, ice storage, heat pumps, and heating and cooling consumers

For a new special education school in Fürstenwalde/Spree, the sizing of the ice storage and energy fence for regeneration and heat input needed to be verified. Load curves were first calculated for individual heating circuits serving ventilation equipment, swimming pool water, and underfloor heating, as well as for the cooling circuit. Loads already specified by the client were retained to ensure comparable calculations.

Model Creation and Weather Scenarios

The simulation model was created from the supplied piping and instrumentation diagram. Components were calibrated using available type designations and data sheets. The system was assessed using test reference years from the German Meteorological Service and simulations of the Cold Winter and Warm Summer scenarios.

Simulation Results

The simulated scenarios confirmed sufficient sizing of the ice storage and energy fence. The system can ensure both heating during a cold winter and cooling during a warm summer. The results also led to plant control recommendations to retain reserves in the ice storage for unexpected operating conditions. Simulation results additionally enabled assessment of overall system efficiency.
