Assessing District Heat Supply From Two Central Heating Plants
As part of the search for a site for a new energy center supplying Bad Langensalza’s district heating networks, EA Systems Dresden carried out fundamental network investigations. Commissioned by BET Büro für Energiewirtschaft und technische Planung GmbH, six selected operating cases were examined. Individual network parameters, including pressure, temperature, and heat losses, were determined and assessed for connection points and relevant critical network points across different operating scenarios. The calculations used EA Systems Dresden’s own district heating network models from the Green City Library in SimulationX. The results enabled sound conclusions about the feasibility and technical practicability of the planned measures.
EA Systems Dresden’s Services
- Calculation of the existing district heating network and comparison with actual operating strategies
- Assessment of whether the new site can supply the entire district heating area if the existing CHP plant or main district heating connection pipeline fails (ring supply through two sites)
- Verification of existing pipe diameters, including replacement recommendations for individual sections
- Assessment of the position and sizing of the new pipeline
Project Results
- Both central heating plants can supply the entire network, provided the new connection pipeline is sufficiently sized
- Critical supply pressures at building substations are not reached
- The pipeline sections investigated are sufficiently sized to integrate the second central heating plant with an appropriately sized connecting pipeline
- Reducing building substation return temperatures to 40 °C reduces network heat losses by 24%
