DigiTwinPlan: Dynamic Building Simulation in the Design Process

March 3, 2026

In the DigiTwinPlan research project, EA Systems Dresden, VICUS Software, IPROconsult, and Fraunhofer IIS are working to integrate dynamic building simulation into the planning and design process. Converting a building plan into a simulation model should become simpler and faster, allowing simulation to inform early planning decisions.

Heat Demand as a Basis for System Sizing

Heat pump sizing is one application. Dynamic building simulation can represent changes in heat demand over time, providing an additional basis for selecting heating capacity. In planning practice, creating suitable simulation models currently requires considerable effort.

DigiTwinPlan aims to lower this barrier through a data-based, automated connection between planning and simulation. The goal is to enable dynamic assessments with an effort comparable to conventional static sizing. The project is thus investigating a way to size building systems according to actual demand and avoid oversizing.
