A Data Model That Grows with Planning

In the DigiTwinPlan research project, our tool for building simulation throughout the planning process is taking shape. In parallel, we are developing a consistent semantic data model that brings together information about buildings, their use, heating and ventilation equipment, and energy supply in an interoperable form.

Early planning stages often establish only the intended use, approximate building size, and energy requirements. The specific building structure and detailed technical systems are added later. The data model is intended to provide the same information foundation throughout these stages, becoming more detailed as planning progresses.

From Planning Information to Simulation and Decisions

The digital representation is intended to enable suitable simulation models to be derived and evaluated automatically at each planning stage: simplified models initially, followed by increasingly detailed ones. This would make building simulation available from the start of planning, before the building and its technical systems are largely defined.

The reverse path is just as important: simulation results must be translated into understandable, reliable information for decision-makers. The goal is a continuous connection between planning information, the semantic data model, simulation, and decision support.
